AH thought about Gadreel
He explains this episode a different take on the ‘letting the snake into the garden’ thing -
That he ‘loved humanity’ and ‘set them free.’
The Judeo-Christian Fall is often interpreted as a Good Thing, with the serpent bringing knowledge to humanity, as represented by the fruit/apple (for instance as it is presented in the His dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman).
So, perhaps whatever Gadreel did provided knowledge to humanity (or he thinks it did), or free will maybe. Then he was punished for it - locked away and tortured for eternity.
Aie me, this makes Gadreel another PROMETHEAN figure - aided humanity by providing fire/knowledge, punished for it via torture…
…which means I’m kind of obligated to love him as a character because Prometheus was the original Byronic Hero and they are kind of my thing and well, I’m sorry I don’t make the rules and other such tumblr platitudes…
edit: Oh god Dean even threatens him with sitting and 'rotting in those chains forever' - which is EXACTLY THE PUNISHMENT PROMETHEUS SUFFERED, being chained up forever. And it’s explicitly stated that being kept in chains is what Gadreel fears, faced with that he longs for death (just as spn!Prometheus expressed a longing for death). Oh man, everything is Prometheus again, huzzah!
(sorry, uh… this is a pet thing of mine… don’t worry about it, carry on…)
